Pickin' 'n' Grinnellin'

Speaking of pretty little towns, on the drive home Sunday I stopped in Grinnell, Iowa, to see Louis Sullivan's "jewel box bank":

Be sure to enlarge this one. [Update: check out the itty-bitty lion at the bottom. He's hilarious.]

Too dark, but the only decent picture I got of the whole building.

The building was closed, but check out some not-very-good pictures of the incredible interior here.

Turns out Grinnell has a bunch of neat buildings, including the Grinnell Herald Building, also on the National Register of Historic Places:

Check out this pic from the Grinnell architecture website. Same car parked out front. Maybe the editor lives there, too.

Too dark again, but another neat public bandstand or gazebo or whatever.

The Interior Telephone Company Building, also on the NRHP ("Nerp").

Like George Costanza, I've always wanted to pretend to be an architect.
